Welcome to StefanOrlowski.com
Stefan Orlowski is a dedicated oil painter. In conjunction with his ongoing investigation into figuration and portraiture, Stefan explores landscape with the aim of eliciting the same unsettling qualities and tensions that underlie his general practice. His landscapes seek to combine a pastoral feeling with something more ominous. In early studies, flowery fields enveloped animal corpses, idyllic forests developed a threatening presence, clouds lay somewhere between the calm of sunset or sunrise and presaging a storm. Nature is in any case not presented as morally neutral. At all times regardless of subject, Stefan’s work seems to explore key themes and aesthetic approaches: contrasts between rougher and more polished styles of painting, formal elements of composition and representing a certain atmosphere, crowding and stillness. As a fan of Werner Herzog movies he often introduces some unsettling elements to the bucolic settings surrounding him. He is interested in seeking out bizarre stories and tales and can’t resist that which is darker and bordering on the abject. Yet everything still feels very much possible in a practice that could go in many directions . In many respects Stefan’s work is an continual exploration of paint as material, of surface and varied textures which serve to embolden the images latent psychological tension.
